Kano group Garo appointment concerns raised over proposed deputy governor role amid legal case, with calls for transparency and due process
Kano State, Nigeria, Sunday, April 2026: Civil society organisation, 4ward Kano Group, has raised strong objections to the reported plan by Kano State Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf to appoint Murtala Sule Garo as Deputy Governor of Kano State, following the resignation of Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo.

In a statement issued in Kano and signed by its Chairman, Nalado Habu, the group described the proposed appointment as “deeply troubling,” citing an ongoing criminal suit instituted by the state government against Garo over alleged misconduct during his time as Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs.
The Kano group Garo appointment concerns stem from what the organisation described as a contradiction within the same administration.
It questioned the rationale behind considering an individual currently facing legal scrutiny initiated by the government for a higher and more sensitive public office.
The group warned that such a move could erode public confidence in governance and accountability, stressing that public trust remains a critical component of effective leadership.
It argued that decisions of this nature must reflect consistency, transparency and adherence to the rule of law.
In its statement, 4ward Kano Group noted that the office of the deputy governor requires unquestionable integrity, adding that any unresolved legal matters should be conclusively addressed before any appointment is made.
The organisation described the situation as one that demands careful consideration given its potential impact on public perception.
The group further alleged the presence of covert political pressure from certain actors seeking to influence the nomination process.
It urged Governor Yusuf to resist any undue influence and prioritise the collective interest of Kano State residents in governance decisions.
It also called on the Kano State House of Assembly to exercise due diligence should the nomination be formally presented for confirmation.
The group emphasised that legislative oversight must be carried out transparently to ensure that only qualified individuals occupy sensitive public offices.
According to the organisation, adherence to ethical governance and due process must remain paramount, warning that any deviation could establish a troubling precedent for future appointments in the state.
The Kano group Garo appointment concerns highlight broader expectations around accountability in public administration.
The group further appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other key stakeholders to remain neutral and allow legal proceedings to take their course without interference.
