Sumner Sambo Urges Atiku, Obi to Reconsider ADC Platform

Sumner Sambo ADC advice urges opposition figures Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi to consider alternative parties amid ADC leadership disputes

Political Editor at Arise News, Sumner Sambo, has advised leading opposition figures, including Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, to consider alternative political platforms amid growing uncertainty surrounding the African Democratic Congress, ADC.

Speaking on The Morning Show on Monday, Mr Sambo said the ADC is currently burdened by multiple legal disputes and internal structural challenges that could undermine its effectiveness as a coalition platform.

He pointed to ongoing disagreements over leadership legitimacy and separate court cases challenging the party’s executive structure, describing them as significant risks for opposition stakeholders seeking a stable base.

According to him, while the ruling All Progressives Congress may benefit indirectly from the opposition’s internal difficulties, the situation within the ADC is largely self-inflicted.

“I think if they have very good strategies, they will start thinking of looking for another political party to adopt at the moment because the problems are numerous,” Mr Sambo said.

He referenced additional concerns surrounding disputes linked to figures such as Nafi’u Bala Gombe and claims questioning the legitimacy of earlier party executives, noting that such issues could further complicate the ADC’s legal standing.

Mr Sambo added that the appeal of the ADC, particularly its alphabetical positioning, may have influenced political calculations, drawing a parallel with the formation strategy of the APC in 2013.

However, he cautioned that the current situation presents deeper structural and legal complications than those observed in previous party formations.

“I wouldn’t advise that they should go ahead with the ADC right now, because the ADC is entangled with so much problems,” he said.

He further noted that some opposition stakeholders are reportedly exploring alternatives, including engagement with other political platforms, though such moves could still face legal scrutiny depending on the status of party registrations and court rulings.

Mr Sambo emphasised that the broader concern lies in the quality and preparedness of political strategies among opposition actors, suggesting that more careful planning may have prevented the current challenges.
