APC origin PDP claim made by Sule Lamido as he asserts APC leaders largely emerged from PDP and urges unity within the opposition party
Former Governor of Jigawa State, Sule Lamido, has asserted that the All Progressives Congress (APC) is an offshoot of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), making the claim during the PDP 2026 National Convention held in Abuja.

Lamido stated that the PDP was established on principles of national unity and sacrifice, arguing that many prominent figures in the APC originally emerged from the PDP.
He maintained that, aside from President Bola Tinubu, the majority of APC leaders have their political roots in the opposition party.
The APC origin PDP claim formed the basis of his appeal to aggrieved members and defectors, whom he urged to reconsider their positions and return to the party.
He described the PDP as a platform that had previously elevated many of its members to positions of power, including governorships and ministerial appointments.
Lamido emphasised the importance of unity within the party, urging stakeholders to set aside personal interests for the broader goal of strengthening Nigeria’s democracy.
He described the PDP as a credible alternative capable of offering inclusive leadership and national direction.
“Let us embrace unity; it is not about any individual, it is about Nigerian ownership,” Lamido said, reinforcing his call for reconciliation among party members.
However, the remarks come amid ongoing internal disputes within the party. A PDP chieftain, Umar Sani, later clarified that Lamido was not allowed to participate in the Ibadan National Convention that produced the Kabiru Turaki-led National Working Committee due to procedural issues surrounding the acquisition of nomination forms.
Sani explained that Lamido’s attempt to contest the party’s national chairmanship did not follow established guidelines, noting that the former governor approached the party at a late stage and reportedly sought to obtain forms from an incorrect location.
Lamido has since challenged the outcome of the convention at the Federal High Court in Abuja, arguing that he was denied the opportunity to exercise his constitutional right to contest the position.

The development highlights ongoing tensions within the PDP as the party continues to navigate internal disagreements while seeking to reposition itself ahead of future elections.
