Ismaeel Ahmed made the remarks on Monday during an appearance on ‘Politics Today’, a programme on Channels Television, in response to questions about mass defections to the ruling party.
He highlighted that while the APC welcomes new members, it does not chase people simply because they wish to defect or to weaken the opposition.
“I am not a fan of defectors in political parties. The political and democratic spirit in me does not appreciate defections,” Ahmed said. “We are merrier every time somebody comes to us, but I thought personally that the opposition was just unbelievably weak.”
Ahmed also noted that despite opportunities for the opposition to strengthen themselves, they had failed to capitalise on political issues to improve their position.
The comment comes amid a wave of defections to the APC, with nearly all governors having switched allegiance, except Seyi Makinde and the governor of Bauchi State, while speculation continues over other possible defections.

Observers say Ahmed’s remarks underline the party’s stance on voluntary membership while highlighting perceived weaknesses in opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general elections.
