PDP Faces 2027 Elections on Brink After Court Nullifies Ibadan Convention

PDP faces 2027 election crisis after court nullifies Ibadan convention, triggering leadership vacuum, defections, and urgent calls for reconciliation

The People’s Democratic Party (PDP) faces a precarious path to the 2027 general election following a Court of Appeal ruling that nullified its November 2025 Ibadan National Convention.

The decision, which upheld a Federal High Court judgement and barred the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from recognising Tanimu Turaki’s leadership, has plunged the party into internal crisis and mass defections.

The court fined the appellants ₦2 million and confirmed that Turaki, backed by Governors Seyi Makinde and Bala Mohammed, lacks lawful authority.

The ruling leaves the PDP without valid leadership, preventing the party from conducting primaries or fielding candidates.

Analysts warn that failure to resolve the crisis could result in deregistration by INEC.

Former presidential aspirant Mazi Sam Ohuabunwa attributed the party’s decline to internal rule-breaking since 2022, noting that successive breaches of zoning and procedural fairness have eroded trust.

“When the PDP broke its rules, I predicted destabilisation. Everybody has been unhappy with how things have turned out since,” he said.

The party’s legislative strength has also been severely affected.

From 36 senators at the start of the 10th National Assembly, the PDP now holds 14 seats, while its House of Representatives numbers fell from 102 to 17. Governors’ forum representation has dwindled to just two loyalists.

Observers trace the crisis to 2022, when disagreements over presidential zoning and party leadership sparked deep divisions.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and Nyesom Wike became central figures in the struggle, while procedural conflicts during primaries amplified mistrust and resentment among party factions.

Chief Chekwas Okorie, founding National Chairman of APGA, warned that the PDP’s presidential prospects are slim unless urgent reconciliation occurs.

“If they get organised, the party could still win state-level elections. But for the presidency, that’s unlikely,” he said.

Dr Eddy Olafeso, former PDP National Vice Chairman (Southwest), stressed that reconciliation is urgent if the party is to meet INEC deadlines.

Meanwhile, defections continue. In the week following the ruling, senators Amos Yohanna, Aminu Iya Abbas, and Ikra Aliyu Bilbis joined the ruling APC, alongside multiple House members.

The party’s legislative influence and public credibility have eroded further as observers warn of rising one-party dominance.

At the PDP’s 106th National Executive Committee meeting, Nyesom Wike rejected accusations of being an APC mole and pledged commitment to genuine reconciliation.

Yet critics argue that his influence may be causing more harm than good.

Legal experts and party insiders outline two paths: swift internal reconciliation or an accelerated appeal to the Supreme Court.

Failure to act risks the party missing 2027 election deadlines, potentially ending its 16-year legacy as Nigeria’s dominant opposition force.

Party elders, including former presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan, are being urged to intervene to mediate reconciliation.

Analysts suggest that the PDP’s survival depends less on legal remedies and more on leaders’ willingness to prioritise national democratic stability over personal ambition.

As the 2027 general election approaches, the PDP’s future remains uncertain. Its next moves will determine whether the party can regain relevance or fade further into political obscurity.
