INEC Chair Warns Perfect Election Unlikely in Nigeria

INEC chairman warns a perfect election in Nigeria may be unattainable for now, citing network adequacy as the main challenge

Abuja, 2 March 2026 – Professor Joash Amupitan, Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has cautioned that Nigeria may not achieve a flawless election in the immediate future.

The warning came during the Citizens Town Hall meeting on the Electoral Act held in Abuja on Sunday.

Professor Amupitan explained that while concerns have been raised about result transmission, the issue is not with the transmission process itself, but with the adequacy of existing networks across the country.

“INEC will strive as much as possible to give this country the best election; however, we may not be able to achieve a 100 per cent perfect election for now,” he said.

The INEC chairman appealed to Nigerians to manage expectations, emphasising that the commission remains committed to delivering credible and transparent polls despite infrastructural and logistical constraints.

The statement comes ahead of preparations for the 2027 general elections, with Professor Amupitan reassuring stakeholders that efforts to strengthen network coverage and technological capacity are ongoing.

“The desire for a perfect election is understandable, but citizens should recognise the practical challenges faced in a country of our size and complexity,” he added, urging political parties and voters to remain patient and cooperative.
