Kenneth Okonkwo Slams FCT Election Under Unknown Law

Kenneth Okonkwo FCT election criticism sparks debate over transparency and legality in recent Area Council polls

Kenneth Okonkwo, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, has criticised the recently concluded Federal Capital Territory Area Council elections, describing them as conducted under an unknown law.

Okonkwo raised concerns over the transparency and legality of the polls during an interview on Channels Television’s programme ‘Sunrise Daily’.

Okonkwo asserted that the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, which won five of the six Area Councils, exploited the absence of a gazetted copy of the Electoral Act 2026.

He warned that the lack of public access to the law undermined the rule of law and voter confidence.

“Nigerians should not be carried away by what this dubious APC is doing. Up till now, the gazetted copy of the Electoral Act 2026 is not out,” Okonkwo said.

“The FCT election was conducted under an unknown law. Before implementing a law on the people, it must be publicly published.”

Observers have noted that Okonkwo’s statement adds to growing debates surrounding the Electoral Act 2026, with civil society organisations calling for full transparency and timely dissemination of electoral regulations.

The ADC chieftain’s comments highlight broader concerns about governance and electoral integrity ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Okonkwo’s remarks were punctuated by a call for citizens and election stakeholders to demand accountability from political actors and regulatory authorities.

Analysts suggested that this intervention could spark renewed scrutiny of INEC’s role in ensuring fair and lawful electoral processes.
