Tribes Cannot Be Wiped Out, Says Akume at Yelewata Relief Distribution

SGF George Akume condemns ethnic cleansing at Yelewata, says no tribe can be eliminated. Tinubu committed to peace and unity in Nigeria

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Senator George Akume, has said no individual or group can eliminate an entire tribe on earth, insisting that such acts are unjust, unacceptable, and divinely impossible.

Speaking on Tuesday during the distribution of Federal Government relief materials to survivors of the recent Yelewata attacks in Benue State, Akume condemned the violent incidents that displaced many residents and led to loss of life.

He visited the scene of the attack and a hospital treating the injured before addressing survivors at the emergency camp in Makurdi.

According to him, the attacks bore the hallmarks of ethnic cleansing. “God Almighty will not allow it,” he said firmly.

“Over six million Jews were killed in Germany, but today, they have multiplied. These killings and displacements are inhuman and unjustifiable.”

Despite the gravity of the situation, Akume urged residents of Benue, particularly the Yelewata community, to maintain peace and resist provocation.

He emphasised President Bola Tinubu’s determination to uphold national unity and protect all citizens across the country.

“The President is fully committed to ensuring that Nigerians sleep peacefully,” he declared, conveying condolences and encouraging victims not to lose hope.

God will not permit the extinction of any people. We must reject every attempt to cleanse or divide Nigeria.

Also speaking at the event, former Minister of Agriculture, Chief Audu Ogbe, lamented the erosion of national empathy.

“Even in war, children and women were once spared,” he said. “But now, even babies are not safe. It’s heartbreaking.”

Ogbe described the victims as some of Nigeria’s most dedicated citizens, feeding the nation despite adversity.

“No society can survive this level of carnage. Benue people have contributed to Nigeria’s unity before. We won’t allow this to continue,” he added.

Senator Jacob Gyado echoed similar sentiments, urging the people to maintain faith in the Tinubu administration and its ability to restore safety and dignity.

Earlier, Akume had toured the site of the massacre in Yelewata and interacted with local stakeholders.
