APC Inaugurates The Progressive Institute’s governing council to boost policy research, leadership training, and evidence-based governance in Nigeria

The All Progressives Congress (APC) inaugurated the governing council of The Progressive Institute (TPI) on Monday at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja, marking a key step in strengthening policy-based governance within the party and Nigeria’s political system.

National chairman Professor Nentawe Yilwatda led the ceremony, stating that the event concluded the process of establishing the institute’s governance structure, first unveiled on 6 September 2024.

The institute is intended to serve as the intellectual engine and policy think tank of the APC.

Professor Yilwatda said the institute, established at the initiative of President Bola Tinubu, aims to deepen ideological clarity, strengthen research capacity, and promote issue-based politics across Nigeria’s party system.

He emphasised that the goal is to build a democracy anchored on strong institutions rather than personalities.

“The inauguration marks a new phase focused on governance reforms, leadership development, capacity building and evidence-based policymaking,” he said.

The party chairman noted that TPI has been registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission as a company limited by guarantee and has received approvals from the Federal Ministry of Education and the National Board for Technical Education, ensuring its independence and credibility.

He outlined the institute’s functions, including research and publication on public policy, governance, and leadership; organisation of workshops and conferences; collaboration with APC organs on political strategy; and capacity building programmes covering leadership, ideology, public policy, elections, and party values.

Professor Yilwatda described the governing council as the highest decision-making organ of the institute, assuring that the president, national working committee, and party leaders nationwide would support its work.

The council comprises nine members, with six ex officio management officials serving as observers.

Speaking at the event, director general Dr Lanre Adebayo said the institute has already implemented capacity building programmes in several states and engaged international partners such as the European Union.
