APC supports Nyesom Wike campaign freedom, affirming the minister’s constitutional right to back candidates across parties in FCT elections
Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, has received backing from the All Progressives Congress, which emphasised that he has the constitutional freedom to campaign for any candidate in any political party.

The statement was made by APC National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka during an interview on Channels Television Morning Brief on Monday.
Morka defended Wike’s endorsement of APC candidates in the February 21 FCT Area Council elections, saying: “If Nyesom Wike wants to go on campaigning for any candidate in any party whatsoever, he has the inherent liberty to do so. He has the right to support any candidate he wants.”
The remarks followed scrutiny over Wike’s influence in local elections, which saw the APC win five of the six area councils.
The outcomes were shaped in part by the withdrawal of two Peoples Democratic Party chairmanship candidates Julius Adamu in Bwari and Zadna Dantani in Abuja Municipal Area Council who subsequently endorsed their APC rivals.
The PDP National Working Committee condemned the withdrawals as “shameful” and “anti-democratic,” alleging that they were induced without party consent and amounted to a “forced consensus.”
President Bola Tinubu also praised Wike’s role, noting the minister’s contribution to the APC victories in both the FCT elections and recent by-elections in Rivers State.

Morka framed Wike’s actions as an exercise of rights guaranteed under the 1999 Constitution rather than a party strategy, sparking debate about cross-carpeting, party loyalty, and the boundaries of political allegiance in Nigeria’s multi-party democracy.
