APC Edo Chairman Says Opposition Must Be Formidable

APC Edo acting chairman Jarret Tenebe says opposition must strengthen itself, while APC remains focused on governance and state success

Jarret Tenebe, acting chairman of the Edo State All Progressives Congress (APC), has said it is not the ruling party’s responsibility to make opposition parties formidable, stressing that their strength is their own responsibility.

Speaking to journalists on Saturday, Tenebe addressed concerns that Nigeria is gradually becoming a one-party state under President Bola Tinubu.

He noted that the constitution guarantees freedom of association and welcomed anyone wishing to join the APC.

“If anyone wants to associate with us, we will accept them. I am not bothered even if all political parties collapse into the APC,” Tenebe said.

Tenebe also dismissed reports of a rift between himself and former Edo State governor and party leader, Senator Adams Oshiomhole, saying that while they differed during the governorship primaries, they have since worked together seamlessly.

“The only point where we differed was during the primaries before the governorship election. After the primaries, we had the election, campaigned together, won together, and have continued to work together. There are absolutely no cracks on the wall,” he said.

Tenebe emphasised that the APC is focused on supporting the state government to deliver on its promises.

“As party chairman, it is my responsibility to stand with the governor, defend him, and ensure he delivers the dividends of democracy promised to the people,” he said.

He also stated that the party is prepared for a seamless congress in Edo State and is ready to assume any role directed by the governor.

Tenebe highlighted ongoing efforts to ensure registered voters in the state can participate fully in the 2027 general elections.

In addition, he revealed that the APC will soon formally receive Labour Party local government chairmen and has met with 16 PDP chairmen who are defecting to the party.

“If you look closely, you will see that the opposition has already collapsed,” he said.

On national issues, Tenebe defended President Tinubu’s handling of insecurity and economic challenges, noting that some problems predate his administration and that progress is being made.
