Dachung Bagos Defects to APC, Cites PDP Failure

Former lawmaker Dachung Bagos defects from PDP to APC, citing party failure and alignment with Plateau Governor Caleb Mutfwang’s political agenda

Former member of the Federal House of Representatives, Dachung Bagos, has formally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress, citing the opposition party’s failure to provide effective leadership.

Bagos, who represented Jos South/Jos East Federal Constituency from 2019 until November 2023, announced his decision on Tuesday during an interview on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief.

He stated that the defection was driven by principle rather than personal ambition.

“We are not jumping parties for political ambition. We are jumping parties because of the platform that wants to give our people a voice, and leadership that says, ‘You can trust us to be able to address this very issue,’” Bagos said.

The ex-lawmaker made the announcement shortly after Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang resigned from the PDP and joined the APC, citing internal crises within the opposition party.

Bagos and other key stakeholders loyal to Mutfwang followed suit on 4 January 2026.

Addressing allegations of sycophancy, Bagos insisted that the defection was a response to the PDP’s failings.

“We are not jumping parties because of sycophancy. We are jumping party because the PDP has failed at this particular moment, and it is irredeemable at this particular moment,” he said.

Bagos emphasised that governance should transcend party lines.

“Governance is beyond party lines. It is about what agendas on the table you can make your people believe and understand that, look, this is the solution,” he said.

“We want the son of nobody to be a local government chairman, we want the son of nobody to be this and that, and we want to see the youth that have never believed in politics to believe in politics,” Bagos added, stressing the importance of youth engagement and opportunities for ordinary citizens.
