Omoyele Sowore has dismissed claims of a political coalition ahead of elections, calling it a gathering of power-seeking interest groups
Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has dismissed claims that a meaningful political coalition exists in Nigeria ahead of the next general elections, describing such arrangements as mere gatherings of interest groups seeking power.

Sowore made the remarks during an interview on ‘The Morning Brief’, a programme on Channels Television on Monday, where he criticised the narrative surrounding opposition coalitions.
He said the so-called Sowore opposition coalition debate is misleading, arguing that the individuals involved are largely driven by personal ambition rather than genuine political reform.
According to him, many of the political actors forming such alliances are the same figures responsible for Nigeria’s current challenges.
“You always throw these questions at me. Why are you not in ADC? Why are you not in the opposition coalition? And I told you that these are just interest groups and persons who are interested in power,” he said.
Sowore added that Nigeria’s past political realignments were often driven more by public frustration with ruling parties than by structured coalitions among political elites.
He referenced the 2015 political transition, noting that it reflected voter dissatisfaction with the then ruling party rather than the strength of any formal alliance.
“The real coalition that needs to happen… wasn’t just the measure of those political parties that made it happen,” he said.
Sowore maintained that genuine political change would come from citizens rather than elite-led alliances, insisting that trust in existing political structures remains low among Nigerians.

His comments come amid growing discussions around possible opposition realignments ahead of the elections, with several political figures reportedly exploring alliances.
