Speaking during Nigeria’s national address in New York, Shettima condemned the rising toll of violence on innocent civilians in Gaza, while reasserting Nigeria’s support for a two-state solution as the most dignified path to lasting peace in the region.
“The people of Palestine are not collateral damage in a civilisation searching for order,” Shettima said.
“They are human beings, equal in worth, entitled to the same freedoms and dignities that the rest of us take for granted.”
He noted that Nigeria cannot remain indifferent to the suffering of its neighbours, near or far, stressing that lasting peace requires justice, inclusion, and human dignity.
Shettima, who represented President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the 80th UNGA session, went further to denounce what he described as aggression and violence meted out to civilians in Gaza.
He also condemned what he termed an “illegal attack on Qatar,” without elaborating on the context—possibly referring to broader geopolitical tensions in the Middle East.
Calling the two-state solution the only dignified route to stability, Shettima reiterated that the path forward must allow both Israel and Palestine to exist peacefully side by side, in accordance with international law and long-standing UN resolutions.

His remarks aligned Nigeria with a global consensus backing the two-state vision, which continues to face obstacles due to renewed violence, stalled negotiations, and deepening mistrust on both sides.
