Speaking during a meeting with a delegation from PLAN International on Monday, the Vice President stressed the importance of targeted government initiatives, such as the school feeding programme, in reducing the country’s alarming number of out-of-school children.

“We will continue to engage with PLAN International and bring the strength of government to bear on your valuable input regarding girl-child education,” Shettima said during the high-level engagement at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

In a symbolic gesture, Shettima invited teenage advocate Joy Ogah to take his seat briefly as “one-day Vice President,” underscoring the administration’s commitment to empowering young girls to lead and speak for themselves.

“In President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, you have an ally you can trust. This government is gender-friendly, inclusive, and fully invested in the future of every Nigerian child, especially the girl-child,” Shettima assured the delegation.

He lauded First Lady Senator Oluremi Tinubu as a shining example of what empowered women can achieve, adding, “We cannot disenfranchise half our population and expect national growth. Empowering girls is not charity — it is strategy.”

PLAN International’s Director of Programme, Quality, and Innovation, Helen Mfonobong Idiong, highlighted the organisation’s work in supporting over 11 million Nigerian children through education, entrepreneurship, and youth programmes.

She also recalled PLAN’s advocacy success that led to the removal of VAT on sanitary pads and diapers through the recent Tax Reforms Act.
