Nigerian Governors Spend Billions Amid Hardship, Says U.S. Embassy Report

Nigerian governors spend billions on luxury homes while citizens face economic hardship, according to a report shared by the U.S. embassy in Nigeria

The United States embassy in Nigeria has spotlighted a damning report that exposes how Nigerian governors spend billions on luxurious government houses amid widespread economic hardship.

The embassy shared a feature by The Africa Report titled ‘Nigeria’s ruling class splashes billions on government houses’, which accuses various state executives of extravagance while citizens suffer under biting inflation and austerity.

According to the report, governors are building or renovating government residences at enormous cost, despite the country’s dire fiscal challenges.

The U.S. embassy amplified the report on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “Such alleged lack of fiscal responsibility fuels inequality and erodes public trust.”

“While Nigerians are tightening their belts, the same cannot be said of the ruling class,” the report observed, calling out governors who appear to be immune to the sacrifices demanded by current economic reforms.

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde was named for approving ₦63.4 billion to renovate the Government House in Ibadan, claiming the existing structure was “embarrassing” and “unbefitting.”

In Gombe, Governor Inuwa Yahaya reportedly committed ₦14.9 billion to construct a new ultra-modern residence, with another ₦14.23 billion allocated to a new House of Assembly complex—despite the state’s low revenue and poverty rankings.

These revelations come at a time when President Bola Tinubu has urged Nigerians to endure the effects of tough economic policies, including the removal of fuel subsidies and floating of the naira.

Such alleged lack of fiscal responsibility fuels inequality and erodes public trust.

Critics argue that while the people suffer, leaders continue to spend lavishly without accountability.

Transparency and accountability organisations were also quoted in the report, warning that unchecked fiscal excesses at subnational levels could threaten governance and deepen citizen mistrust.

The report noted that most of these expenditures were not tied to public need or transparent procurement processes, reinforcing the view that leadership priorities remain self-serving.

“No real democracy thrives on this scale of impunity. We cannot build trust when elected officials prioritise opulence over service,” said one civic activist quoted in the article.

Many Nigerians on social media expressed outrage at the scale of spending, urging both the federal government and international partners to demand better governance and fiscal discipline.

As public scrutiny increases, analysts say the role of institutions like the U.S. embassy in promoting transparency could apply pressure on Nigeria’s ruling elite to change course.

“It’s not just about dollars and naira—it’s about values. Nigerians deserve leadership that reflects sacrifice, not indulgence,” another commentator added.

The embassy’s decision to highlight the story signals growing concern within the international community about Nigeria’s governance culture.

Whether this translates into real change at state level, however, remains to be seen.
