2027: Aisha Yesufu Blasts INEC Over Proposed Use of AI

Aisha Yesufu blasts INEC over its proposed use of AI in 2027 election result collation and calls for greater accountability and transparency

Human rights activist and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) chieftain Aisha Yesufu has criticised the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over its proposal to adopt artificial intelligence (AI) in result collation for the 2027 general elections.

Yesufu expressed her opposition in a video posted on X, arguing that the electoral body should not be turning to artificial intelligence for the process.

She also referred to concerns surrounding the Corporate Affairs Commission’s (CAC) use of AI, claiming that companies were still dealing with the repercussions of the commission’s engagement with the technology.

“INEC has no business using AI for the 2027 election. Companies are still reeling from the repercussions of CAC dabbling in AI,” she said.

Her remarks come amid public discussions about the role technology could play in Nigeria’s electoral process ahead of the 2027 polls.

Beyond her criticism of INEC’s proposal, Yesufu urged Nigerians to prioritise accountability, transparency and public scrutiny when choosing political leaders.

She argued that the quality of governance depends significantly on the people elected to public office and their willingness to answer questions about their decisions.

“To get what you are asking for, we have to first vote in those who are not afraid of accountability, transparency and scrutiny!” she said.

According to the activist, citizens seeking answers on governance issues must also consider the conduct and priorities of the politicians they elect.

“Whatever you need answers to when it comes to governance starts and ends with who is voted into office,” she added.

INEC’s proposed use of artificial intelligence in result collation has become a subject of debate as Nigeria prepares for the next general election.

The technology could raise questions about how electoral information is processed, verified and communicated to the public.

However, its proposed use does not, on its own, establish whether the process would improve or undermine electoral transparency.

Yesufu’s comments reflect her concerns about the technology and the broader issue of accountability in public institutions.

The key issue ahead of the 2027 elections will be how INEC explains any proposed technological changes, the safeguards put in place and the measures available to ensure that election results remain transparent and verifiable.

INEC’s proposal, as described in the report, and Yesufu’s criticism have added to the discussion about electoral credibility and the role of technology in Nigeria’s democratic process.
