APGA Anambra council election ends with the party winning all 21 chairmanship and 362 councillorship positions across the state
The All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA, has secured a sweeping victory in Anambra State, winning all 21 local government chairmanship positions and 362 councillorship seats after the council elections held across the state on Saturday, August 29, 2026.

Genevieve Osakwe, Chairman of the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission, ANSIEC, announced the final results after the completion of the collation exercise, confirming that APGA candidates had emerged victorious in every local government area and electoral ward contested.
The result gives the ruling party complete control of Anambra’s elected local government structures, with APGA taking all 21 chairmanship positions and every one of the 362 councillorship seats.
Osakwe described the exercise as peaceful and credible, saying the election was conducted across 362 electoral wards and 21 local government areas in accordance with the state’s electoral laws and guidelines.
“The elections took place across 362 electoral wards and 21 local government areas in Anambra State and were conducted in a peaceful, free, fair, transparent and credible manner,” Osakwe said.
The sweeping APGA Anambra council election victory comes after a campaign period in which the party sought to consolidate its hold on the state’s grassroots political structures under Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo.
One of the issues raised after the election concerned the reported withdrawal of the Young Progressives Party, YPP, from the contest in Anambra East Local Government Area.
Earlier reports had suggested that the YPP withdrew its chairmanship and councillorship candidates following allegations of violence and malpractice.
Osakwe, however, said ANSIEC had no information indicating that the party had withdrawn from the election.
The commission’s figures showed the YPP chairmanship candidate receiving 1,658 votes in Anambra East, while the APGA candidate recorded 50,169 votes to secure victory.
The figures underline the scale of APGA’s advantage in the local government, although the commission’s position on the reported withdrawal adds another layer to the post-election discussion.
Osakwe thanked residents for their confidence in the electoral commission and commended security agencies and the media for their contribution before, during and after the voting exercise.
The result also strengthens Soludo’s political position at the local government level, giving his party an unusually broad mandate across the state’s 21 councils.
Speaking on behalf of the newly elected chairmen, Emmanuel Igwebuike, who won in Ayamelum Local Government Area, praised Soludo, ANSIEC, security agencies and the media for what he described as their role in creating a conducive environment for the election.
The new chairmen are expected to assume responsibility for the administration of the state’s 21 local government areas, while the 362 councillors will serve as elected representatives across the wards.
The scale of APGA’s victory is likely to attract further political scrutiny, particularly because local government elections remain an important measure of grassroots support and organisational strength.
For the Soludo administration, the result offers a powerful political advantage as the government moves into the next phase of its programme.
For opposition parties, however, the complete sweep leaves questions about their competitiveness and ability to build effective structures at ward and local government level.
ANSIEC’s declaration now formally concludes the state electoral process, although any candidate or party dissatisfied with aspects of the exercise retains the option of pursuing available legal remedies.

For now, APGA has emerged with control of all 21 local government councils and all 362 councillorship positions, delivering one of the most comprehensive electoral victories in the party’s history in Anambra.
