Sanwo-Olu says the APC is ready to win Lagos in 2027 as the party begins strategic planning ahead of the general elections
Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu said on Monday, August 24, 2026, that the All Progressives Congress is preparing to secure victory across Lagos in the 2027 general elections after he visited the party’s presidential and governorship campaign offices to assess preparations for the polls.

Sanwo-Olu said the visit gave him an opportunity to review the work being undertaken by the campaign committee, which he described as already engaged in strategic planning ahead of the elections.
“The campaign committee is fully in its element, mapping out the road ahead and sharpening our strategy,” Sanwo-Olu said in a statement posted on his X account.
The governor said the preparations reflected what he described as serious and structured work behind the scenes as the APC positions itself for another major electoral contest in Lagos.
“There is serious, structured work happening behind the scenes,” he said.
The visit comes as political parties begin laying the groundwork for the 2027 elections, with Lagos expected to remain one of the country’s most closely watched political battlegrounds.
The APC has maintained a strong electoral presence in Lagos for decades, although the state’s political contests have become increasingly competitive in recent election cycles.
The party retained the governorship in 2023 when Sanwo-Olu defeated the Labour Party candidate, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, and the Peoples Democratic Party candidate, Abdul-Azeez Olajide Adediran, popularly known as Jandor.
Sanwo-Olu’s latest comments indicate that the APC intends to approach the 2027 elections as a coordinated statewide campaign rather than concentrating solely on the presidential and governorship contests.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is seeking another term on the APC platform, while Dr Obafemi Hamzat has been identified by the governor as the party’s candidate for the Lagos governorship contest.
The combination of Tinubu’s presidential bid and the Lagos governorship race is likely to give the state’s APC campaign considerable national and local significance.
Sanwo-Olu said the commitment shown by party members had strengthened his confidence in the organisation’s preparedness.
“I am encouraged by the energy and sense of purpose,” the governor said.
He described the APC as “focused, aligned and ready to win across the board”, signalling the party’s ambition to maintain its dominance in Lagos at both the national and state levels.
The governor also linked the electoral effort to the continuation of his administration’s development agenda, saying the party would continue to build on what he described as Lagos’s momentum.
“Together, we will keep building on Lagos’s momentum and pushing our state forward,” Sanwo-Olu said.
The remarks come more than a year before the 2027 elections, giving the APC time to refine its campaign structure, mobilise supporters and respond to opposition parties seeking to make gains in the state.
Lagos remains particularly important to Tinubu, who served as governor from 1999 to 2007 and built much of his political influence through the state’s political structure.
His relationship with Lagos has continued to make the state a symbolic and strategic centre for the APC.
The 2027 contest is nevertheless expected to be closely watched, particularly following the strong showing of the Labour Party in Lagos during the 2023 presidential election.
Peter Obi won Lagos State in the presidential vote, defeating Tinubu, while the APC retained the governorship.
That contrast demonstrated that the APC’s long-standing political advantage in Lagos does not necessarily translate into automatic victories across every electoral contest.
For Sanwo-Olu, however, the message from the campaign offices was one of confidence and preparation.
