Sokoto Council Chairman Resigns From APC, Quits Office

Sokoto Council Chairman Resigns from APC and steps down as Tangaza Local Government chairman, citing personal reasons and administrative challenges

The Executive Chairman of Tangaza Local Government Area in Sokoto State, Isa Salihu Bashir Kalanjeni, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC) and stepped down from his position as council chairman.

The Sokoto Council Chairman Resigns development was confirmed in two separate resignation letters made available to journalists on Tuesday.

In a letter dated 5 May 2026 and addressed to the APC Ward Chairman of Kalanjeni Ward in Tangaza Local Government Area, Kalanjeni announced his decision to leave the ruling party with immediate effect.

He described his resignation from the APC as a personal decision.

“I wish to formally inform you of my decision to resign from the APC with immediate effect. This decision is borne out of purely personal reasons,” he wrote.

In a separate letter dated 7 July 2026 and addressed to the Secretary to the Sokoto State Government and the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Kalanjeni also resigned as Executive Chairman of Tangaza Local Government Area.

According to the former council chairman, the decision followed extensive consultations with his family, political associates and community leaders.

“This difficult decision has been reached after extensive consultations with my family, key political associates and community stakeholders,” he stated.

Kalanjeni also cited administrative challenges as a major factor behind his resignation, saying the situation had made it difficult for him to carry out his duties effectively.

“Due to recent unavoidable administrative challenges, I find that I am no longer able to execute the responsibilities of this office to the high standard expected of me,” he said.

He thanked the people of Tangaza Local Government Area, members of the local government legislature and council staff for the opportunity to serve, while wishing the incoming administration success.

The resignation comes amid ongoing political realignments across several states ahead of the 2027 general elections, with a number of politicians changing party affiliations or stepping down from public office.

As of the time of filing this report, neither the Sokoto State Government nor the APC had issued an official statement on Kalanjeni’s resignation from the party and his position as council chairman.
