Ebonyi Rejects PDP Claim of Rift Between Nwifuru, Wike

Ebonyi Rejects PDP Claim of Rift Between Nwifuru, Wike, insisting the governor’s remarks were misrepresented

The Ebonyi State Government has dismissed claims that Governor Francis Nwifuru is at odds with Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, accusing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) of misrepresenting the governor’s comments to create political tension ahead of the 2027 elections.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Commissioner for Information and State Orientation, Ikeuwa Omebeh, said the PDP had deliberately twisted remarks made by Nwifuru during the endorsement rally for President Bola Tinubu and other All Progressives Congress (APC) candidates held on June 15, 2026, at the Pa Ngele Oruta Township Stadium in Abakaliki.

According to the commissioner, the governor did not threaten Wike during the event, contrary to claims by factions of the opposition party and reports in some sections of the media.

“At no time did His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Francis Nwifuru, issue any threat against the Honourable Minister of the FCT, Barr. Nyesom Wike,” Omebeh said.

He explained that the governor’s remarks were directed at opposition figures allegedly spreading misinformation and attempting to stir political unrest in Ebonyi by invoking Wike’s name.

Omebeh said the governor’s use of the word “consume” was metaphorical, warning that those found spreading false information would face the full weight of the law if they failed to desist.

“Their Excellencies, Rt. Hon. Francis Nwifuru and Barr. Nyesom Wike maintain mutual respect. As such, Governor Nwifuru has no reason whatsoever to make any uncomplimentary remarks or threats against Barr. Nyesom Wike,” he added.

The commissioner accused the PDP of attempting to create a non-existent rift between the two political figures for partisan advantage, describing the effort as baseless.

He also urged the opposition party to focus on resolving its internal leadership challenges rather than criticising the Ebonyi State Government.

According to Omebeh, the PDP’s prolonged internal disputes have weakened the party and undermined its credibility to comment on governance.

He further claimed that the PDP poses no significant electoral threat to the APC in Ebonyi State ahead of the 2027 general elections, expressing confidence that residents would renew their support for Governor Nwifuru’s administration at the polls.
