Kano NDC Fires Back at Governor Yusuf Over Bye-Election Claim

Kano NDC fires back at Governor Yusuf, saying its absence from the bye-election was a strategic decision ahead of the 2027 general elections

The Kano State chapter of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has responded sharply to comments attributed to Governor Abba Yusuf over the party’s decision not to participate in the recently concluded Dawakin Kudu/Warawa Federal Constituency bye-election.

Governor Yusuf, through a statement issued by his spokesperson Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, had suggested that the NDC’s absence from the contest signalled a likely advantage for the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

However, the Kano NDC leadership dismissed the claim, insisting that its decision was strategic and not an indication of political weakness.

Speaking through a statement issued by his media aide, Adam Said Adam, the Kano State NDC Chairman, Hussaini Isa Mai Riga, said the party remained focused on long-term consolidation rather than short-term electoral contests.

“NDC is a party of strategy and discipline. Skipping one bye-election does not mean we are weak. It means we are focused on the bigger picture,” Mai Riga said.

He explained that the party’s current priority was strengthening its structure across all 44 local government areas in Kano State ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to him, the party is investing in grassroots mobilisation, political education and policy development aimed at addressing unemployment, insecurity and economic hardship affecting residents.

Mai Riga added that the party had studied Nigeria’s political history and was determined to avoid what he described as “wasteful electoral spending” on contests that do not align with its broader strategic direction.

The NDC chairman expressed confidence that the party would perform strongly in future elections, particularly with what he described as growing support from residents and internal political structures aligned with the Kwankwasiyya movement.

He urged party members to remain calm and focused, advising them to avoid inflammatory exchanges and continue engaging in lawful political activities.

Mai Riga also called on security agencies to maintain neutrality as political activities intensify across the state, stressing the importance of a level playing field for all parties.

The Kano NDC reiterated its commitment to democratic principles, issue-based politics and what it described as the pursuit of good governance for the people of the state.

Political observers say the exchange highlights early positioning ahead of the 2027 elections, as parties in Kano gradually intensify their strategic preparations.
