Fred Agbedi Says Jonathan 2027 Bid Will Shake Nigeria

Goodluck Jonathan 2027 presidential bid impact: Fred Agbedi says ex-president’s return will disrupt Nigeria’s political landscape ahead of elections

A member of the House of Representatives, Fred Agbedi, has said that the possible participation of former President Goodluck Jonathan in the 2027 presidential election could significantly alter Nigeria’s political landscape.

Agbedi, who represents the Sagbama/Ekeremor Federal Constituency of Bayelsa State, also confirmed that the former president is expected to contest the 2027 election under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Wednesday, Agbedi said Jonathan’s entry into the race would have far-reaching political implications given the calibre of other contenders already in the field.

“It carries significant weight; it will disrupt the entire political environment,” he said.

The lawmaker argued that Jonathan remains well positioned to lead Nigeria again, describing him as a “tested and trusted” leader capable of addressing the country’s current challenges.

Agbedi maintained that Nigerians are increasingly seeking experienced leadership following successive administrations, adding that Jonathan’s return could offer renewed stability.

He further suggested that economic and governance concerns under the current administration were influencing public sentiment ahead of the next election cycle.

His comments followed a recent Federal High Court ruling in Abuja which dismissed a suit seeking to bar Jonathan from contesting the 2027 presidential election.

Justice Peter Lifu ruled that the plaintiff lacked legal standing to institute the case and imposed fines for what the court described as an abuse of judicial process.

The judgment reaffirmed earlier appellate decisions confirming Jonathan’s eligibility to run for office.

The court also awarded monetary penalties against the plaintiff and in favour of both the former president and the Attorney-General of the Federation.
