Amaechi Wins ADC Ebonyi Primary as former minister defeats Atiku Abubakar in factional presidential election held across 171 wards
A faction of the African Democratic Congress in Ebonyi State on Monday declared former Rivers State Governor and ex-Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi, as the preferred presidential flag bearer following a ward-based primary election conducted across the state.

The announcement was made in Abakaliki by the Coordinator of Electoral Matters and Returning Officer for the exercise, Bassey Edogi Imoke, who stated that the direct primary was held across 171 political wards in Ebonyi State.
Imoke disclosed that a total of 12,641 delegates were registered, while 12,100 were accredited and participated in the exercise, describing the process as transparent and orderly.
According to the official result, Amaechi secured 6,050 votes, defeating former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, who polled 1,210 votes, while Muhammad Hayatudeen scored 4,840 votes.
At the end of the collation, Imoke declared Amaechi the winner, stating that he had emerged as the preferred flag bearer of the party in the state ahead of the 2027 general election.
Earlier, the Ebonyi State Chairman of the party, Dr Mrs Jennifer Adibe-Nwafor, said the exercise was conducted peacefully across all wards, noting that the direct primary format ensured wider participation and inclusiveness among members.
She commended party members for their conduct and congratulated Amaechi, describing the process as free, fair and credible, with all aspirants given equal opportunity.
However, tension emerged within the party as another faction reportedly announced Atiku Abubakar as the winner of a parallel primary election, deepening internal disputes over legitimacy of the exercise.
