Atiku Abubakar Slams Alleged ADC Deregistration Plot as Failed Scheme

Atiku Abubakar ADC deregistration plot reaction as former vice president condemns alleged attempt following INEC court filing and Supreme Court ruling

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has reacted strongly to reports surrounding an alleged attempt to deregister the African Democratic Congress (ADC), following a recent Supreme Court decision and a fresh court filing by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

ADC deregistration plot controversy emerged after INEC, in a court submission, reportedly dismissed the legal basis for an application seeking the party’s deregistration, stating that it failed to meet constitutional requirements.

The electoral body maintained that the deregistration of political parties is strictly guided by law and cannot be influenced by discretion or political pressure, according to details contained in the court document.

Reacting to the development, Phrank Shaibu, Senior Special Assistant on Public Communication to Atiku Abubakar, described the alleged move as a “desperate and failed plot conceived in the shadows of fear”.

Shaibu said the INEC position had exposed what he termed a politically motivated attempt to weaken opposition voices, insisting that such actions undermine democratic principles.

“What we are witnessing is the unraveling of a poorly scripted political ambush,” Shaibu said, adding that no democracy can thrive where competition is undermined through institutional manipulation.

The plot reaction comes in the wake of a Supreme Court ruling last week which set aside an earlier Court of Appeal order concerning the recognition of David Mark as National Chairman of the ADC.

Legal observers note that the latest developments have further intensified political debate around party autonomy, judicial interpretation, and electoral regulation ahead of the 2027 general elections.

As the situation unfolds, stakeholders continue to watch closely for further judicial clarification and INEC’s final position on the matter.
