The internal debate has widened following emerging discussions around a possible Obi–Kwankwaso arrangement, which some party stakeholders believe could strengthen the opposition’s chances in the next general election.
While Atiku’s supporters continue to push for a ticket that may include Peter Obi, other influential voices within the ADC argue that a younger candidate or alternative pairing would better position the party for electoral success.
Political discussions have also been shaped by broader calls for opposition unity against President Bola Tinubu, with some figures advocating a consolidated front rather than multiple competing ambitions.
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo is reportedly among those encouraging a unified opposition structure, although differing preferences within the coalition have fuelled internal disagreements.
Within the ADC, opinions remain sharply divided, with some stakeholders insisting Atiku’s experience and national reach remain critical assets, particularly in the northern region, while others argue that the momentum of Obi and Kwankwaso’s support bases cannot be ignored.
Atiku has previously maintained that he is open to stepping aside if a consensus candidate emerges through a transparent process, although he has also emphasised his electoral strength and national appeal.
Meanwhile, emerging political alignments between Obi and Kwankwaso supporters have triggered fresh debate among party loyalists, with both camps increasingly confident about shaping the party’s final ticket.
Some supporters have openly expressed strong positions on social media, reflecting rising tensions within the opposition space as negotiations continue.
ADC officials have urged restraint, warning that escalating political rhetoric could undermine ongoing efforts to build consensus ahead of the party’s primaries.

The party is expected to continue internal consultations as it attempts to balance competing ambitions and present a unified front ahead of the 2027 elections.
