Bauchi Governor Bala Mohammed Nears Defection to ADC in Major Shift

Bala Mohammed defect ADC as Bauchi governor nears defection from PDP, with a formal announcement expected following final consultations

Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State on Wednesday disclosed in Bauchi that he is in the final stage of consultations to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to the African Democratic Congress, ADC, with a formal announcement expected imminently, a development that underscores a significant Bala Mohammed defect ADC political shift.

The governor made the disclosure after an executive meeting with a high-powered ADC delegation led by former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Babachir Lawal.

The meeting is understood to be part of a series of engagements aimed at consolidating opposition alliances ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Bala Mohammed, who also serves as chairman of the PDP Governors’ Forum, said his decision followed unsuccessful efforts to resolve internal divisions within the PDP.

He stated that prolonged reconciliation attempts had failed to produce the unity needed to move the party forward.

The governor revealed that two committees, one at the national level in Abuja and another within Bauchi State, were established to explore possible political pathways, including a potential move to the All Progressives Congress.

However, he noted that those efforts did not yield the desired outcome.

According to him, the inability to resolve internal disagreements left him with limited options.

He described the situation as one in which political actors must align with platforms that reflect their aspirations and political direction, adding that continued fragmentation within the PDP influenced his decision.

Bala Mohammed also alleged that internal resistance, including actions attributed to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, hindered reconciliation efforts and broader political negotiations.

He claimed that repeated attempts to mediate differences within the party were unsuccessful despite engagements at the highest levels.

The governor said discussions with the ADC delegation had been productive and were nearing completion, noting that the new alignment presented what he described as a viable and forward-looking political platform.

He emphasised that the process was being handled with caution to ensure a smooth transition.

Lawal, speaking on behalf of the delegation, said the visit was part of a broader initiative by the ADC national leadership, led by David Mark, to strengthen opposition unity ahead of the elections.

He described Bala Mohammed as a committed and fearless political figure whose entry into the party would significantly boost its prospects.

The meeting signals a potential realignment within Nigeria’s opposition politics, as key figures reposition themselves ahead of the next electoral cycle.

Observers note that such movements may reshape alliances and influence the balance of political power in the lead-up to 2027.

Bala Mohammed reaffirmed his preference for opposition politics, expressing confidence that the ADC provides a platform aligned with his political outlook.
