PDP factions unity grows as Makinde and Wike camps initiate talks to resolve crisis and prepare for the 2027 elections
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has taken initial steps to resolve internal divisions, as factions loyal to Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike engaged in talks to prevent a full-scale collapse ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Factional PDP National Chairman Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN, confirmed that the National Working Committee (NWC) aligned with the Makinde camp had initiated communication following the intervention of the Board of Trustees, led by Senator Adolphus Wabara.
“In obedience to the advisory of the Court of Appeal, Ibadan, the Board of Trustees constituted a high-powered committee to interface with our estranged party members,” Turaki said in Abuja on Wednesday.
The NWC demonstrated goodwill by postponing key meetings of the National Executive Committee and National Caucus while moderating public messaging.
Turaki noted that the gesture had initially received little reciprocation, citing instances of “weaponisation of hurtful rhetoric” from the opposing camp.
Despite early resistance, Turaki said a positive shift had occurred.
“I can unequivocally confirm that, as of today, leaders on both sides have broken the ice and are exploring various pathways towards a lasting resolution,” he said.
Turaki appealed to supporters nationwide to maintain calm, warning that careless actions could undermine the fragile progress.
He added that once an agreement is reached, the party would willingly withdraw all ongoing legal cases to foster reconciliation.
The PDP chairman also reassured aspirants, promising the party will field candidates for all elective offices.
“We are willing to bend as far as our necks and backs allow… PDP will not die,” he said, emphasising the party’s commitment to defending and consolidating democracy.
Internal resistance to reconciliation was acknowledged, with Turaki revealing that some obstructive elements had been identified and “flushed out.”
The NWC also passed a vote of confidence in Governors Seyi Makinde and Bala Mohammed, praising their roles during the crisis.

With both camps signalling readiness to compromise, party watchers now focus on whether this opening will lead to sustained unity or if tensions may resurface as the road to 2027 approaches.
