Adamawa Rep Muhammed Basil urges Atiku Abubakar to retire from active politics and serve as a national elder statesman for younger leaders
Muhammed Basil, a member of the House of Representatives representing Jada/Ganye/Toungo/Mayo-Belwa Federal Constituency in Adamawa State, has called on former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar to withdraw from partisan politics and assume the role of an elder statesman.

Basil said the former vice-president’s vast political experience would be better utilised as a national adviser rather than an active partisan figure, particularly as age and shifting political alliances signal the need for a transition.
“Whatever one does in life, there comes a time to step aside and give way to younger people, especially when age is no longer on your side,” Basil said.
He added that Atiku’s legacy would be preserved if he exited active politics at the height of public respect.
The lawmaker praised Atiku’s contributions to national development, describing his potential role as a political compass for emerging leaders as both honourable and necessary.
Basil also expressed confidence in the Peoples Democratic Party’s dominance in Adamawa State ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The call comes shortly after Atiku’s son, Abba Atiku, defected from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress, receiving his membership card in Yola North Local Government Area.
Abba stated his move was inspired by the economic and infrastructural reforms of President Bola Tinubu, praising his governance as merit-based and inclusive.
Another son, Adamu Atiku, remains in the PDP, serving as Commissioner for Works and Energy Development under Governor Ahmadu Fintiri.
