ADC leaders urge unity ahead of 2027 general elections

ADC 2027 unity is crucial, party leaders say, urging members to overcome internal divisions and present a credible alternative to APC

Leaders and supporters of the African Democratic Congress have called for renewed unity and collective action as the 2027 general elections approach, warning that internal divisions are weakening efforts to present a credible alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress.

The appeal was made during the public presentation of The Loyalist, a book authored by ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi, in Abuja yesterday.

The event attracted a cross-section of prominent politicians, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar; former Senate President David Mark; former governors Rauf Aregbesola, Rotimi Amaechi, Kayode Fayemi, Peter Obi, Lyel Imoke and Abdulfatah Ahmed; as well as former House of Representatives Speaker Aminu Tambuwal and his deputy Emeka Ihedioha.

Also present were former APC National Chairman John Oyegun, former NBA President Olumide Akpata, and other political leaders.

Bolaji Abdullahi emphasised that while Nigerians are ready for change, the opposition has yet to demonstrate the unity required to deliver it.

“For 2027, Nigerians are ready. But I don’t think we are ready. We are not coming together enough. We are not holding hands enough,” he said.

He warned that visible divisions among opposition actors are eroding public confidence and weakening the prospects of collective success.

Abdullahi acknowledged that his blunt remarks had attracted criticism online but insisted he would continue to speak out for the sake of national renewal.

“I beg you, our leaders, Nigerians are waiting; they know you, what they are saying is ‘You people must not fail.’ That’s what I get everywhere I have gone. I’m sure you also get it,” he added, urging party members to channel their energy toward unity and a common mission.

Atiku Abubakar, the Special Guest of Honour, praised the book for challenging Nigerians to rethink loyalty in public life.

“The Loyalist invites us to examine loyalty to country, community, institutions, and our own moral compass. Loyalty should strengthen the common goal, not narrow the circle of belonging,” he said.

Rauf Aregbesola dismissed claims that recent defections to the APC signalled growing dominance, stressing that electoral outcomes are determined by the people, not governors.

David Mark also lauded Abdullahi’s patriotism, describing the mission to rescue Nigeria as a collective responsibility requiring cohesion and strategic collaboration.
