Ayo Fayose Says PDP Is Weak, Touts Peter Obi’s Rising Influence

Ayo Fayose PDP opposition claims highlight party divisions as he backs Peter Obi’s growing influence ahead of 2027 elections

Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has declared that the Peoples Democratic Party has lost its status as Nigeria’s leading opposition party, citing deep internal divisions as the root of its decline.

Fayose made the assertion during an interview on Arise News, where he assessed the state of opposition politics and the shifting political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to the former governor, the crisis within the PDP is self-inflicted and not the result of pressure from the ruling All Progressives Congress.

“You must be very honest. When you are weak, tendencies are there for you to fall to the right of the stronger side,” Fayose said.

He dismissed claims that President Bola Tinubu played any role in the party’s troubles, insisting that the blame lies squarely within the PDP.

“The challenges in the PDP, it’s not the fault of Asiwaju, the president. The failure in my home is not the fault of my neighbour,” he stated.

Describing the opposition party as fractured, Fayose said internal disunity has eroded its strength.

“The issues are very clear. The PDP is a house that is divided against itself,” he said.

Turning to emerging political forces, Fayose identified Peter Obi, the former Labour Party presidential candidate, as a dominant figure reshaping the opposition space following his reported move to the African Democratic Congress.

“Are we saying ADC is not dominant? Recently, Obi moved there. Obi is the only life in ADC,” Fayose said.

He downplayed the relevance of other political heavyweights linked to the platform, describing them as spent forces.

Fayose stressed that Obi’s political appeal alone has elevated the ADC’s national relevance, regardless of whether the party ultimately succeeds electorally.

“Obi is the only traction. Obi is the only meaning, Obi is the only factor in ADC that matters,” he said.

The former governor added that Obi’s influence transcends party structure, arguing that any platform he joins instantly gains visibility and momentum.

As political alignments continue to evolve, Fayose’s remarks underscore growing uncertainty within the opposition and the powerful role individual political capital now plays in Nigeria’s electoral future.
