PDP to Hold Crucial NEC Meeting June 30

PDP notifies INEC of its 100th NEC meeting scheduled for June 30 to resolve key disputes, including the National Secretary position and zonal congresses

In a letter dated May 30 and signed by the acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, the party notified the electoral body of its 100th NEC meeting.

The party must chart a clear path forward, said a senior Peoples Democratic Party official as the PDP formally informed the Independent National Electoral Commission of its plans to convene a critical National Executive Committee meeting on June 30, 2025.

The event will take place at the National Secretariat in Abuja and aims to address unresolved internal disputes that have dogged the party since before the 2023 general elections.

The notification complies with INEC’s guidelines, which require a minimum of 21 days’ notice for meetings that may involve leadership decisions, including those related to the National Secretary position.

The PDP has faced escalating tensions in several regions, with disputes in Rivers State, unresolved South-South and South-East zonal congresses, and leadership controversies all contributing to mounting instability.

The NEC meeting has been postponed six times due to deepening divisions among top figures.

The party must chart a clear path forward.

An insider revealed that the meeting would revisit the contentious National Secretary issue, ratify zonal congress outcomes, and review committee reports established during the previous NEC gathering.

Notably, the 99th NEC had set up the National Convention Committee and Zoning Committee, which the June 30 meeting is expected to finalise.

The crisis over the party’s National Secretary intensified after the PDP Caucus Fact-Finding Committee confirmed INEC’s recognition of Senator Samuel Anyanwu in the role.

This issue was deferred during the May 27 NEC meeting, prompting the scheduling of the 100th session.

Attempts to reach Damagum and PDP spokesperson Debo Ologunagba were unsuccessful. However, the letter submitted to INEC and obtained by Sunday PUNCH emphasised the party’s resolve to address its challenges constructively.

Supporters of FCT Minister Nyesom Wike warned that excluding Anyanwu from the process would be unacceptable and might worsen the situation.

Yet, the insider stated that the notification aligns with resolutions reached at the previous NEC and represents a genuine effort to unify the party.

With two sitting governors already defecting to the ruling APC, stakeholders are keenly watching how the PDP will navigate this crucial moment.
