Wike Slams Amaechi Over Electronic Transmission Protest

Wike criticizes Rotimi Amaechi’s protest for electronic transmission, calling it political theatrics and urging vigilance against manipulation

Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, took a veiled jab at former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi over his participation in a protest advocating for electronic transmission of election results.

Speaking on Tuesday at the Distinguished Personality Lecture at the Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Abuja, Wike questioned the sincerity of Amaechi’s actions, particularly regarding his claim that he brought his son, a medical doctor, to provide assistance to injured protesters.

Wike asked pointedly, “Where was the ambulance? Where was the medical equipment? You cannot treat people with empty hands,” describing Amaechi’s move as a “theatrical display” aimed at manipulating public emotion.

The FCT Minister further accused Amaechi and other opposition leaders of political opportunism, highlighting that many advocating for electoral reforms now were silent when holding influential government positions.

Wike described the current agitation as “transactional,” suggesting it is motivated more by personal political interests than a genuine commitment to democracy.

He urged students and citizens to remain vigilant against political manipulation, stressing that the true dividends of democracy lie not in protest slogans, but in the diligent work of building resilient institutions and infrastructure.
