Vice-President Kashim Shettima departed Abuja on Thursday for Addis Ababa at the invitation of Ethiopian Prime Minister Dr Abiy Ahmed.
According to a statement by his spokesperson, Mr Stanley Nkwocha, the Vice-President will participate in the official launch of Ethiopia’s Green Legacy Programme — a major national effort to combat deforestation, enhance biodiversity, and mitigate climate change impacts through the planting of 20 billion tree seedlings over four years.
“This flagship initiative aligns with Africa’s growing urgency to address climate threats while building greener economies,” Nkwocha said.
Shettima’s itinerary also includes a tour of Ethiopia’s integrated agro-industrial facilities aimed at boosting Nigeria’s collaboration in agricultural innovation and sustainability.
Among the strategic sites scheduled for visit are the Adama Industrial Zone, Mojo Poultry Farm, Shera Dibandiba Mojo Family Integrated Farm, Lume Avocado Nursery Site, and the Bishoftu Pea Youth Farm.
This visit aims to deepen those relations while exploring new opportunities in climate action, food security, and sustainable industrialisation.
“These visits are part of broader efforts to strengthen bilateral ties in agriculture and industrial development,” the spokesperson noted.
To underscore the significance of the occasion, Prime Minister Abiy will host Vice-President Shettima and his delegation at a State Dinner at the National Palace in Addis Ababa.
Nkwocha stated that the visit represents a continuation of the longstanding relations between Nigeria and Ethiopia, which span military support, regional peacekeeping, and economic cooperation.
“This visit aims to deepen those relations while exploring new opportunities in climate action, food security, and sustainable industrialisation,” he added.
Nigeria and Ethiopia, two of Africa’s most populous nations, have consistently aligned on regional development goals.
