Senator Garba Musa Maidoki leaves the ruling APC for the African Democratic Congress, citing unresolved internal disputes after party primaries
The Senator representing Kebbi South, Garba Musa Maidoki, has formally defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC), citing unresolved internal disputes following the party’s recent primaries in Kebbi State.

Maidoki, who chairs the Senate Committee on Legislative Compliance and serves as Vice-Chairman of the Senate Committee on Information and National Orientation, announced his defection in a letter addressed to the Senate President and read during Tuesday’s plenary session.
The senator said his decision followed extensive consultations with his constituents and was driven by lingering disagreements within the APC after the party’s primaries, where he was reportedly among those affected by the screening process.
His exit adds to a growing list of defections from the APC to the ADC in recent months, as internal party tensions continue to reshape political alignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
During plenary, Deputy Senate President Jibrin Barau appealed for calm and urged Maidoki to reconsider his decision, describing the situation as an internal family matter that could still be resolved.
“I wish to intervene and plead with the distinguished senator to rescind his decision. There is no internal problem in the APC in Kebbi State. This is more of a family dispute and we can reconcile,” Barau said, moving that the defection be stepped down for reconciliation.
However, Senator Maidoki reportedly declined the appeal, insisting that his decision was final after prolonged dissatisfaction with the party’s internal processes.
The African Democratic Congress has in recent months positioned itself as a growing alternative for politicians dissatisfied with the ruling party’s internal structures, particularly following disputed primaries and internal party disputes.

Maidoki’s defection is expected to intensify political realignments in Kebbi State and may influence the balance of power in Kebbi South ahead of the next election cycle.
