Goodluck Jonathan 2027 Presidency speculation rises after visit to IBB in Minna, as Northern groups urge him to contest if Tinubu isn’t re-elected
Goodluck Jonathan 2027 Presidency speculations gained renewed momentum on Sunday after the former president visited Retired General Ibrahim Babangida at his Hilltop residence in Minna, Niger State.

The visit, while publicly described as part of birthday celebrations for the former military ruler—who turned 84—has sparked deeper political conversations, especially amid calls from some Northern political groups urging Jonathan to re-enter the 2027 presidential race.
Over the years, Babangida’s Minna home has become a political pilgrimage site for those seeking national office.
Sunday’s visit further deepened the perception that Jonathan may be testing political waters, even if subtly.
There have been persistent appeals from certain Northern stakeholders asking Jonathan to return to Aso Rock in 2027, arguing that if President Bola Tinubu is not re-elected, a Southern candidate should complete the region’s second term in the spirit of balance.
Although Jonathan did not address the 2027 campaign talk during the visit, the timing and symbolism of the Minna trip did not go unnoticed.
Instead of addressing his political future, Jonathan used the opportunity to shower encomiums on IBB, calling him a “committed leader who always stood for the unity of Nigeria.”
“That is why today, his house is like a Mecca of sort. People come to him regularly, and that tells you a lot about the character of IBB,” Jonathan said.
He noted that IBB’s national appeal stems from his refusal to act as a sectional figure, highlighting his enduring reputation as a unifier.
“Our prayer for him is for God to grant him long life so that he can continue to mentor the younger ones to follow his exemplary footsteps,” he added.
While the visit was part of a low-key birthday celebration marked by prayers and symbolic gifts, it also served as a subtle reminder of Jonathan’s enduring influence in national politics.
The Goodluck Jonathan 2027 Presidency narrative is far from settled, but Sunday’s quiet move in Minna may have just reignited interest in a potential political comeback.
Whether he will respond to the Northern overtures remains to be seen, but for now, Nigeria is watching—and waiting.
