Kayode Fayemi, a former governor of Ekiti State and author of If This Giant Must Rise, made the remarks while reflecting on the state of governance in Nigeria and the broader challenge of nation-building.
Speaking during the interview, Fayemi said that although the APC remains in power, its developmental progress has been slower than anticipated for a country he believes has significant potential.
“I am a member of the All Progressives Congress. Yes, we are not progressing. I would have loved us to have progressed further than where we are,” he said.
The former governor added that while some progress has been made, it has not been sufficient for a nation he described as having a strong “manifest destiny” to lead the African continent.
“It’s not as if we are not making progress at all, but it’s so slow for a nation that has a manifest destiny to lead the African continent,” he stated.
Fayemi emphasised the need for a more intentional approach to governance and national development, noting that nation-building is an ongoing process that requires structure, focus and consistency.
He further argued that no nation achieves a perfect system, but stressed that deliberate efforts are necessary to strengthen institutions and improve outcomes for citizens.
