Kente Withdraws from Taraba Governorship Race 2027

David Sabo Kente has withdrawn from the Taraba 2027 governorship race, citing consultations and calls for peace and political stability

Frontline Taraba State governorship aspirant David Sabo Kente has withdrawn from the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship contest ahead of the 2027 general election, a decision that has generated mixed reactions across the state’s political space.

The Withdrawal was confirmed in a statement issued in Jalingo on Friday by his media consultant, Ben Adaji, who said the decision followed wide consultations with stakeholders, religious leaders and traditional rulers.

According to the statement, Kente’s withdrawal was guided by considerations of peace, political stability and broader interests within Taraba State, rather than personal or political weakness.

Supporters of the former aspirant expressed disappointment over the development, especially given the resources and long-standing commitment he had invested in previous political attempts.

The statement noted that Kente had previously contested governorship elections, including the 2015 cycle, where he remained in the race until the end despite political pressure.

It also referenced past APC primaries in Taraba State, recalling that Sani Abubakar Danladi emerged as candidate in 2019 following internal party realignments, while Senator Emmanuel Bwacha secured the 2023 ticket after defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party.

Observers say the references were aimed at highlighting Kente’s consistency within the APC despite shifting internal political dynamics over the years.

The statement further dismissed speculation that Kente may have been induced to withdraw financially, insisting that he had invested substantial personal resources in his governorship ambition.

It described his political journey as one driven by service and development rather than financial motivation, noting that his business background could have offered alternative investment returns outside politics.

Kente was quoted as saying that his decision was guided by conviction and consultation, adding that “God knows my heart” in reference to his political choice.

While some supporters have accepted the move as a strategic sacrifice for peace, others view it as a setback after years of mobilisation and preparation.

The statement, however, urged supporters to remain calm and optimistic, noting that future political opportunities remain open.

Analysts say Kente’s withdrawal is likely to reshape early calculations within the APC ahead of the 2027 Taraba governorship race, particularly in relation to emerging alliances and power blocs.

For now, his exit marks a significant shift in the state’s political landscape as parties begin early positioning for the next electoral cycle.
