Atiku Appoints Dr Benjamin Ugwu as Southeast SA Coordinator

Atiku Benjamin Ugwu appointment announced as former VP names Dr Benjamin Ugwu Special Assistant to coordinate Southeast support groups for 2027

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has appointed Dr Benjamin Chika Ugwu as Special Assistant and Coordinator of support groups in Nigeria’s Southeast region ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The appointment was announced on Thursday, April 24, 2026, in a statement released by the Atiku Media Office in Abuja.

Dr Ugwu, a former Special Assistant to former President Goodluck Jonathan between 2010 and 2015, will oversee coordination of support structures across Abia, Anambra, Ebonyi, Enugu, and Imo States.

His role includes organising, professionalising, and strengthening all support groups in the region aligned with Atiku’s political network.

The appointment is part of ongoing political mobilisation efforts as preparations intensify toward the 2027 elections.

Dr Ugwu is a seasoned academic, entrepreneur, and public administrator with experience spanning governance, development projects, and international consultancy.

Born on December 22, 1970, he holds multiple academic qualifications, including degrees in English Studies, Economics, and Petroleum Economics at doctoral level.

He has served in several leadership capacities, including roles in African and Caribbean business organisations and development-focused NGOs in the United Kingdom and Nigeria.

Ugwu also leads philanthropic initiatives through the Ben Ugwu Foundation, which focuses on community development and social impact programmes.

He is a recipient of national honours and holds traditional titles, reflecting his influence across both academic and cultural institutions.

The appointment is expected to strengthen Atiku Abubakar’s political engagement in the Southeast as parties begin early mobilisation for the 2027 elections.
