ACF Warns Against 2027 Politicking Amid Northern Crises

ACF warns 2027 politicking must not overshadow Northern Nigeria’s rising insecurity, poverty, and social crises

The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has raised fresh alarm over worsening insecurity, poverty, and social dislocation in Northern Nigeria, warning political actors against early 2027 election manoeuvres at the expense of urgent regional crises.

ACF Chairman, Mamman Mike Osuman (SAN), issued the warning on Wednesday during the Forum’s 79th National Executive Council (NEC) meeting at its secretariat on Sokoto Road, Kaduna.

He said the strong turnout at the session reflected members’ deep commitment to the region despite the financial and physical strain of attending without remuneration.

Osuman urged members to dedicate “premium time and attention” to discussions directly impacting the lives of the downtrodden across Northern communities.

He specifically cautioned against “convoluted groups” already planning for 2027 elections while local populations face hunger, out-of-school children, banditry, kidnapping, and terrorism.

The chairman noted that while some public office holders support ACF financially, many remain disconnected from the Forum’s core goals and programmes.

He reminded members that the ACF Constitution clearly defines responsibilities, conduct, and communication channels, urging caution in the use of some of the Forum’s platforms.

Osuman disclosed that the Finance and General Purpose Committee spent ten hours reviewing ACF’s financial framework and submitted recommendations to the National Working Committee (NWC), which approved key decisions the following day.

He commended the NWC’s diligence, explaining that the body resolves issues before they are presented to the NEC for policy guidance and implementation.

Plans to strengthen internal discipline were also unveiled, including the creation of a Code of Conduct and Ethics Committee.

Professor Nuhu Mohammed Jamo, former Dean of Law at Ahmadu Bello University, has been nominated to head the nine-member committee, pending NEC approval.

Reflecting on developments since the last NEC session in August 2025, Osuman lamented the escalation of terrorism, banditry, insurgency, and kidnapping in Southern Kaduna, Katsina, Benue, Kwara, and other parts of the North.

He said repeated attacks have displaced families into overcrowded camps, closed schools, crippled rural economies, and restricted access to farms and healthcare.
