Senator Peter Jiya Defects to APC in Political Shift

Peter Jiya defection to APC confirmed as Niger South senator leaves PDP, citing internal divisions during Senate plenary in Abuja

Senator representing Niger South Senatorial District, Peter Jiya, on Tuesday in Abuja formally defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress, marking a notable shift in Nigeria’s legislative political landscape.

The defection was announced during plenary by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who read Jiya’s letter on the floor of the Senate.

The letter confirmed the senator’s decision to leave his former party and align with the ruling APC.

In his communication, Jiya attributed his departure to persistent divisions and internal disagreements within the Peoples Democratic Party.

He stated that the quarrels and unresolved disputes had hindered effective political engagement and party cohesion.

The move adds to a growing pattern of political realignments within Nigeria’s National Assembly, where lawmakers have increasingly cited internal party instability as a key factor influencing defections.

Jiya’s switch is expected to strengthen the numerical strength of the APC in the Senate while further weakening the opposition’s representation.

The development underscores ongoing tensions within the PDP, as the party continues to grapple with internal disputes that have, in several instances, led to the exit of prominent members.

Political observers note that such defections may have implications for party dynamics ahead of future elections.

Jiya’s transition to the APC reflects broader strategic movements within Nigeria’s political environment, where lawmakers often reposition themselves in response to internal party conditions and shifting alliances within the legislature.
