Federal Government Fulfils Super Eagles Housing Promise

Federal Government fulfils Super Eagles housing promise as 1994 AFCON heroes begin receiving house allocations three decades after the initial pledge

After three decades of waiting, the Federal Government fulfils Super Eagles housing promise made to members of the victorious 1994 squad that won the Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia, marking a significant moment in Nigerian sports history.

In a statement published on the official website of the Ministry of Housing and Urban Development, the government confirmed that housing allocations had commenced for players of the legendary team.

One of the beneficiaries, former striker Efan Ekoku, was formally presented with a letter of allocation for a house in Abuja.

Represented at the brief ceremony by his niece, Lisa Jenifer Nwagbogun, Ekoku becomes one of the first recipients of the long-delayed reward.

“I am deeply grateful to the Federal Government and the Ministry of Housing for fulfilling this long-standing pledge to my uncle. It is truly heartening to witness such commitment to integrity and follow-through,” Nwagbogun said during the ceremony.

The presentation was conducted by Pemi Temitope, Director and Head of Department, Public Building and Housing Development, who stood in for the Minister of Housing and Urban Development.

Temitope reaffirmed that the initiative reflects the government’s ongoing commitment to recognising patriotic service and honouring national heroes.

“This gesture not only honours Mr Efan Ekoku’s service but also restores faith in the value of public promises being kept,” Nwagbogun added.

The original pledge, made in 1994, saw renewed life under former President Muhammadu Buhari, who formally approved its implementation in 2022, nearly 28 years after the initial commitment.

As part of the process, housing units are being allocated across various states, with some players, like Ekoku, receiving theirs in the Federal Capital Territory.

The fulfilment is widely seen as a symbolic but overdue act of national gratitude.

Many Nigerians and sports enthusiasts have applauded the development, seeing it as a long-awaited recognition of the team that brought pride to the nation with their historic AFCON win.

With this step, the government signals its intent to honour past promises, even if delayed, and to encourage future generations to serve the country with distinction.
