In a statement issued in Kaduna on Wednesday, Alawuje stressed that democracy must not become “a battlefield for ethnic division or reckless provocation,” adding that political ambition should never threaten national unity.
Alawuje expressed concern over the opposition’s recent political engagements, alleging that certain actors were exploiting sensitive historical matters to stoke tension and score political points.
He recalled the painful memories of the June 12 crisis, noting that the events remain a stark reminder of the dangers when a nation is pushed to the brink.
“Nigerians must resist any move capable of reigniting divisions associated with that period,” he said.
Alawuje emphasised that the June 12 chapter had already been formally recognised and addressed at the highest level, particularly under former President Muhammadu Buhari, whose administration took steps to honour the democratic mandate linked to the historic date.
“The actions taken during Buhari’s administration were in the spirit of reconciliation and national healing. The matter has been resolved and should not be weaponised for present-day political contests,” he added.
Alawuje also praised the efforts of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in preserving national unity, urging citizens to prioritise peace over provocation and unity over division.
He stressed that focus should remain on economic recovery, institutional strengthening, and inclusive development, rather than the revival of old grievances.
While acknowledging that political competition is a natural aspect of democracy, Alawuje warned that deliberate attempts to reopen healed wounds for personal ambition could threaten the fragile stability Nigeria has worked hard to sustain.

He concluded by calling on Nigerians to rise above divisive narratives, safeguard the country’s peace, and work towards a united, peaceful, and forward-looking nation.
