Big TENT Boss Explains Obi’s ADC Presidential Bid Motive

Obi ADC bid explained as Big TENT Nigeria’s Ibrahim Abdulkareem says Peter Obi wants to unite Nigerians and offer an alternative to one-party dominance

Ibrahim Abdulkareem, Director-General of Big TENT Nigeria, has said that former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi is seeking the presidential ticket of the African Democratic Congress in a bid to unite Nigerians and provide an alternative to what he described as the drift towards a one-party political system.

Ibrahim Abdulkareem made the remarks during an interview on Prime Time, a current affairs programme aired on Arise Television and monitored on Wednesday.

According to Ibrahim Abdulkareem, Peter Obi’s engagement with the ADC is part of a broader coalition-building effort rather than a personal power project.

Ibrahim Abdulkareem said Peter Obi had been involved with the ADC from the early stages and had conditioned his participation on the party becoming a vehicle for genuine political reform.

Ibrahim Abdulkareem said Peter Obi was motivated by a desire to build a political system that works for Nigeria and reflects the long-standing demand of citizens for credible and effective leadership.

He said Peter Obi consulted widely with supporters, particularly young Nigerians and members of the Obidient movement, before indicating interest in the ADC platform.

The Big TENT Nigeria chief stressed that Peter Obi was not demanding the ADC ticket as an entitlement and was not seeking preferential treatment within the party.

Ibrahim Abdulkareem said Peter Obi’s approach was rooted in dialogue and consensus-building, aimed at creating a political platform capable of uniting diverse interests and restoring public trust.

The Obi ADC bid comes amid increasing realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections, with opposition figures exploring coalition arrangements to challenge the dominance of the ruling All Progressives Congress.

Political analysts say such coalition efforts reflect growing concern among opposition actors about shrinking political space and the risk of reduced electoral competition.

Peter Obi has not formally declared his intention to run for president in 2027, but his continued engagement with opposition platforms and civil society groups has fuelled speculation about his political plans.

Whether the ADC can successfully emerge as a viable national alternative remains uncertain, but Ibrahim Abdulkareem’s comments highlight the strategic calculations now shaping Nigeria’s evolving political landscape.
